Systems design engineering professors Dr. John McPhee and Dr. Alexander Wong have been awarded top prizes from Ontario’s leading engineering professional society.

The Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA), released by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) annually, recognize engineers who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and communities.

Understanding student experience is a key to better learning outcomes, say engineering instructors

Teaching and learning in engineering and other STEM disciplines can sometimes seem to be impersonal, in the sense that the subject matter is highly technical, and the focus is often on demonstrating discrete competencies.

Dr. Nima Maftoon was awarded $250,000 for a research project called Eliminating Tympanostomy through the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). The project addresses the most common surgery performed on children, which will involve development of a device for low-risk treatment of otitis media, an infection or accumulation of liquid in the middle ear. The device is a patch that includes hollow microneedles to minimize long-term damage.

Throughout Vidyard's evolution there has been one constant: talent from the University of Waterloo

When Michael Litt looks back at Vidyard’s 12-year timeline, he is amazed.

Then: Michael Litt (BASc ’11) and his partner Devon Galloway (BASc ’10) were finishing up their Systems Design Engineering studies in 2010 when they saw an opportunity for a startup in the video sharing space.

System can effectively monitor activities such as sleeping, eating and frequency of bathroom use

Hajar Abedi, PhD candidate in systems design engineering (SYDE) is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and wireless technology to unobtrusively monitor elderly people in their living spaces and provide early detection of emerging health problems.

The Department of Systems Design Engineering honoured new and promoted faculty members at the Faculty of Engineering Commencement Day on April 14, 2023.
