Dr. Alexander Wong, a systems design engineering professor at Waterloo, has been selected as a new Institute of Physics (IOP) fellow.

Systems design engineering professors Dr. John McPhee and Dr. Alexander Wong have been awarded top prizes from Ontario’s leading engineering professional society. 

The Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA), released by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) annually, recognize engineers who have made outstanding contributions to their profession and communities. 

Dr. Alexander Wong, Professor of Systems Design Engineering and Canada Research Chair offered his expertise on artificial intelligence to a Canadian government report entitled, "A Canadian Perspective on Responsible AI". The report aims to provide guidelines and principles on responsible AI.

A team from Waterloo Engineering has won an international competition aimed at advancing the state-of-the-art in the mapping of sea ice.

The team included professors, researchers and graduate students in a remote sensing research group that is a subgroup of the larger Vision and Image Processing (VIP) Lab within the Department of Systems Design Engineering.

Dr. Nima Maftoon was awarded $250,000 for a research project called Eliminating Tympanostomy through the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF). The project addresses the most common surgery performed on children, which will involve development of a device for low-risk treatment of otitis media, an infection or accumulation of liquid in the middle ear. The device is a patch that includes hollow microneedles to minimize long-term damage.
