Waterloo researchers develop new AI technology to examine data on food and fluids consumed in LTC homes

A detailed analysis of consumed food showed there is a need to improve diets in long-term care (LTC) homes to make them healthier for residents.

Jenna Veugen was recently named an Optica Women Scholar. 20 winners are selected each year for this international award which aims to empower the next generation of women leaders in optics and photonics. Jenna is completing her MASc in SYDE with a focus on optical system design, optical imaging, and optical fibre-based systems. She is conducting research on Photon Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS) at PhotoMedicine Labs under the supervision of Dr. Parsin Haji Reza

A company launched by four Waterloo Engineering classmates in a living room “with old computers and no salaries” has secured $20 million in funding for product innovations and to accelerate growth.

Based in Toronto, Nulogy was founded by friends Jason Tham, Sean Kirby, Kevin Wong and Jason Yuen (all BASc ’02, systems design engineering) to provide supply chain software and support.

Naomi Paul was awarded the Department of Systems Design Engineering's (SYDE) first IBET Fellowship. She is the University of Waterloo's first Indigenous recipient of the award. Naomi is completing her MASc in SYDE focusing on Human Factors and Ergonomics under the supervision of Dr. Shi Cao and will begin her PhD in Fall 2023.

Scholarship created by family of Waterloo alumni gets first-year students off to a good start

During high school in the Waterloo Region, Rachel Wormald attended Go ENG Girl, an outreach program hosted by the University of Waterloo that introduces grade 7 to 10 girls to the world of engineering.

She was immediately hooked.

James Tweel, systems design engineering (SYDE) PhD candidate was awarded the W.S. Rickert Graduate Fellowship in Science. This scholarship, valued at  $25,000 for three terms is awarded to a graduate student conducting research in the areas of Nano-medicine, biotechnology, and biomedicine at the University of Waterloo. Tweel conducts optical imaging research under the supervision of Dr. Parsin Haji Reza at PhotoMedicine Labs and illumiSonics Inc
