At the University of Waterloo School of Accounting and Finance, you’ll develop practical skills in data analytics, statistical analysis and technology, applying them to accounting, finance and real-world business problems.
Make technology work for you
Business problems don’t come with simple answers. Data, analytics and technology can help you figure out what’s happening, why it matters and what to do next. Build the skills to ask better questions, make sense of the evidence and turn data into insights that drive better business decisions.
Analytic Methods for Business 1
FMBUS 112
This course introduces students to a structured approach for framing business problems and applying analytical methods commonly used by accounting and finance professionals. Students learn to identify relevant questions, organize and prepare data, and build models using both end-user and programming oriented analytical tools that support descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics. Students also learn how to use visualization and storytelling techniques to effectively convey analytical findings and translate them into actionable conclusions and recommendations.
Analytic Methods for Business 2
FMBUS 113
Building on FMBUS 112 this course introduces students to statistical methods and data analysis techniques applied to accounting and business decision-making. Students develop the ability to apply probabilistic reasoning to real-world business problems, design and interpret sampling strategies, and construct confidence intervals. They learn to conduct hypothesis testing to support decisions under uncertainty, and to apply linear regression for prediction and insight. Through hands-on exercises, students gain practical skills in analyzing business data, interpreting results and communicating findings effectively in professional contexts.
Foundations of Data Analytics: Accounting and Finance Applications
AFM 224
This course introduces students to data analytics techniques and their applications in accounting and finance contexts. Students will learn to apply analytical frameworks to business problems, working with tools for data preparation, analysis and visualization. Students will apply regression analysis, classification methods (e.g., logistic regression, decision trees), clustering analysis and time series forecasting to analyze problems within accounting and finance.
