Symphyotrichum plumosum (Small) Semple is native to deep, dry to moist, sandy soils, pine flatwoods, pine-scrub oak woods, favored by fires and clearcuts in Franklin Co., Florida (Brouillet et al. 2006 FNA).  It is distinguished from S. concolor by its elongated, spreading to reflexed phyllaries.  The species is diploid with x=4 (2n=8).
