As 2024 begins, the sixth annual Map the System competition is in full swing at the University of Waterloo. The Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement team is facilitating events for students to learn more about the competition with the help of Jordan Li, this year’s Map the System Campus Lead.
Drawing on his experiences supporting PeaceTech start-ups in the Grebel Peace Incubator, working with students in the PeaceTech Living Learning Community at Conrad Grebel University College, and introducing engineering students to Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Waterloo, Heidebrecht has been collaborating with an increasingly diverse array of organizations and individuals from around the world who share the common goal of designing technology that contributes to peace and justice rather than undermines it.
As the winter break draws near, the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement community is anticipating the coming new year while taking a moment to reflect on 2023. The past year has seen far too many victims of violence and injustice in our world, not to mention on our own university campus. But we continue to find hope and inspiration in the ways our dynamic array of participants seek to advance peace, and have compiled a few of the many moments when their work was featured by print, radio, television, and other media outlets over the past year.
As the end of 2023 looms, the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement team is hard at work preparing for the 2024 edition of the Map the System competition. Jordan Li, a 4th year student at the University of Waterloo and active member of the Conrad Grebel University College community, is serving as this year’s Map the System Campus Lead, and is eager to share insights from her experience competing in the past.

Organizations affiliated with the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement, including Core Collaborators and Grebel Peace Incubator participants, strive to create a more peaceful world by engaging with governments at provincial, national, and transnational levels. Project Ploughshares, a Core Collaborator at the Centre, has played a pivotal role in shaping various policies related to disarmament.
October welcomed a host of conversations, and learning opportunities, allowing those involved with the Kindred Credit Union Centre for Peace Advancement to form meaningful connections, gain valuable insights, and engage in thoughtful dialogue.
