A message from the Office of Research.

Staff working in the University of Waterloo’s Central Animal Facility (CAF) and Research Ethics team have been awarded the 2025 Perotech Team Spirit Award, recognizing their exceptional collaboration, innovation, and commitment to excellence in animal care and research ethics support.

This accolade celebrates a team whose spirit, inclusivity, and shared purpose have made a significant impact in the workplace and beyond. For the team, this recognition is a testament to their dedicated service, not only to the animals in their care but also to the researchers and students who rely on them.

Their goal is to provide exceptional care and support for the animals and the research community, and to foster a culture of learning and collaboration.

Team members Jean Flanagan, Saeideh Davari, Lauren Welker, Kelan Hirtle, Martin Ryan, and Jennifer Frayne contribute their unique skills and a shared passion for excellence. Their collective efforts ensure top-quality animal care and a supportive environment for researchers and students alike.

This group exemplifies mutual respect and seamless teamwork, creating a dynamic, supportive, and innovative environment. Researchers have praised the team as “amazing,” “supportive,” and “professional,” highlighting their commitment to leading by example to support the ethical conduct of research and animal care. The Perotech Team Spirit Award celebrates not only their daily achievements but also their inspiring team spirit.

Congratulations to the team on this well-deserved recognition!

Volunteers needed for fall move-in

A yellow banner that says "we need your help to welcome our students to campus this fall" with a picture of students moving in.

A message from Campus Housing.

While we have recently confirmed our class of incoming first-year students for September 2025, Campus Housing is already preparing for fall move-in and is looking for eager staff, faculty, students, and alumni who want to welcome students to their new home on campus.

We are looking to fill over 600 volunteer shifts to support move-in. Your support would make a big difference for our new students!

 Move-in volunteer details

  • Campus Housing move-in will take place between Thursday, August 28 and Sunday, August 31, 2025.
  • Volunteer for a few hours or as many shifts as you’d like!
  • View roles and shifts on the volunteer sign-up form.
  • Tip: You'll first need to click "register" if you don’t have an existing Vome account
  • Questions can be directed to movein@uwaterloo.ca

 Highlights for volunteers

  • If you sign up as a general volunteer, when you arrive for your shift you can let the team lead know how you are most comfortable supporting the event. Ways to support move-in range from helping students navigate campus, to welcoming students and families in parking lots, to supporting students with their belongings.
  • Don’t want to volunteer alone? Sign up with a friend or even a group as a team-building activity.
  • Similar to 2024, every parking lot will have a Campus Housing staff member in a team lead role to ensure every volunteer is supported throughout their shifts.

Statistical insights that can save lives

Dr. Shu (Joy) Jiang on a stairway.

This is the latest article from the 2025 issue of Waterloo Magazine.

With one in eight women worldwide diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Shu (Joy) Jiang (PhD ’18) is developing critical new tools to help women screen for the disease before it’s life-threatening.

This work has earned her recognition as one of Forbes’s 30 under 30 in health care in 2023 — and it all connects to the biostatistics research she did as a Waterloo student.

“The real lightbulb moment was when statistics stopped being theory, and I realized that I could actually apply these models in the real world to help people,” she said.
