Rachele Fischer, previously a co-op student with the Ecohydrology research group, has been awarded a research internship to the University of Tuebingen, Germany. This twelve week internship is fully funded through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). While there Rachel will be working on hydrological and geochemical controls on microbial activity in groundwater systems. Congratulations Rachele!

The rare Research Forum

Beyond the trails and gardens, rare is home to many research projects investigating the different habitats and species.  The rare Research Forum which will showcase a variety of research projects happening on our land. We will learn about the growing tall-grass prairie, predation of wasps on tree crickets, ecological restoration of meadows, and hear from many others about what their research is uncovering at rare. Refreshments will be offered.

Water Institute Research Symposium 2013

The Water Institute Research Symposium of 2013 will showcase the breadth of Waterloo's water research programs, focusing on areas of particular interest to our external partners and stakeholders. The symposium is an excellent opportunity to interact with our researchers and students.

Research Symposium 2013 will be immediately followed by our annual Distinguished Lecture, Student Poster Competition and Reception.

Symposium on plastics in the Great Lakes

The Ecohydrology Research Group at the University of Waterloo is embarking on a feasibility study to assess the potential for using remote sensing and/or autonomous infrared sensors to monitor the distributions of microplastics in the oceans and large lakes. Field trials will focus on the Great Lakes.

The management and use of water resources within a province and country is usually regulated by water laws set by that province and country. However, what happens when the water resource is international in nature and therefore governed by international water law?

Kiosk on the Waterfront: The Science of Canada's Water

Dr. Philippe Van Cappellen will attend the NSERC science kiosk on the Waterfront: The Science of Canada's Water, to be held in the Senate of Canada on Monday, October 15, 2012. The Honourable Kelvin K. Ogilvie, Senator, will present the kiosk to inform parliamentarians about research in all aspects of water. The Senator will be accompanied by Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada (NSERC) and researchers from across Canada, including Dr. Van Cappellen.
