Norma Jacobs: The Two Row Wampum

We are pleased to welcome Norma Jacobs, Wolf Clan, Caugga Nation of the Great Haudenausaunee Confederacy to speak to us on the two row wampum.

Her Ongwehonwe “the real people” name is Gae Ho Hwako “ancestral females holding the canoe before me” carries a profound responsibility. She is a Longhouse Faithkeeper and Elder. She has held strong through the onset of colonialism to her culture, language, values and beliefs.

oSTEM @ UWaterloo Panel: International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM

oSTEM @ UWaterloo would like to invite you to their International Day of 2SLGBTQ+ People in STEM Panel on November 18th at 7PM, held online! If you don't already know, oSTEM or Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) is a chapter-based organization focused on 2SLGBTQIA+ people in STEM with over 100 student chapters at colleges and universities. oSTEM @ UWaterloo aims to create space for 2SLGBTQIA+ students to thrive professionally, academically, and socially.

This virtual event will allow attendees to hear more about what it is like to be queer and trans in the field, and the work that these folks do in mechanical engineering, physiology and medicine, climate science, and biochemistry. Indigenous Speakers Series presents Talena Atfield

The Indigenous Speakers Series is honoured to present Dr. Talena Atfield, member of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation of the Six Nations of the Grand River. Focusing on her work with Hodinohso:ni basket weavers, Dr. Atfield will speak about Western notions of the origins of Indigenous artistic practices versus the importance of arts and creation within the community.

The Role of an Elder

On Wednesday January 25, 2023 at 12:45pm in the Cambridge Architecture Auditorium, our Elder In Residence, William Woodworth of the Bear Clan, Mohawk, Six Nations of the Grand River, will be speaking on the role and nature of a native Elder based on his experience with Chief Jacob Thomas, perhaps the most important Haudenosaunee Elder of the twentieth century.

Dogs Against Cat Calling

Come by the multi-purpose room in the Student Life Centre on Monday February 13th from 2-3 pm to hang out with our furry, friendly therapy dogs! While you’re there, visit with SVPRO and the Sexual Assault Support Center (SASC), and take home some fun swag. If you can’t make it for the doggos, be sure to come by any time after 10 am to say hello, and spin SVPRO’s new wheel, complete with prizes!
