Director

JJennifer Reidennifer Reid is a doctoral candidate in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo. Her research focus is measuring the thermal conductivity of novel materials. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Physics from the University of Waterloo (2016).

Jennifer Reid has been involved with the GSA since Fall 2016, when she sought to reboot the Physics GSA unit association. She is passionate about student advocacy and building community, which drove her involvement in various leadership roles. She was President of the Physics GSA from January 2017 to October 2017. From May 2017 to April 2019, she served as the GSA councillor for Physics and Astronomy. During this time, she represented graduate students on various committees, including the Provost’s Advisory Committee on Equity, the Policy 30 revision committee, the Council Working Reform Group and the Joint Policy Review Committee. She is also a co-founder of FemPhys, a feminist physics club at UW, and has experience advocating for under-represented students.

Her leadership experience has prepared her for serving on committees, writing policy, teamwork, and advocacy aspects of the Director position. She hopes to continue to influence GSA policy so that the GSA Council – the GSA’s political advocacy body – is empowered to guide the direction of the GSA’s advocacy efforts. She envisions the Board of Directors, Council and GSA management working closely together to align the GSA’s goals with graduate student interests and to respond to current graduate student issues in a timely fashion.
