Abstract

The article titled \“Cultural and heritage tourism in Canada: Opportunities, principles and challenges\” by Stephen Boyd can be described as containing three important portions to it. The first portion reviews and explains how the heritage tourism industry in Canada is extremely diverse; opposed to the ignorant stereotypical (mainly from outsiders) product base that is comprised of \“Mounties, mountains and moose\”. The second portion of the article aims to describe the principles of sustainable heritage tourism, specifically the conservation and control of the resource base, authenticity and quality; partnerships between hosts and guest, and the necessary need for education/information for a \“complete experience\”. The last portion describes the field observations that Boyd undertook in 1998. The locations were various cultural and heritage tourism attractions in Ontario and Alberta. Boyd then applied and examined the above listed principles in the Canadian context to which a further discussion was provided that detailed the challenges the Canadian sites faced when implementing those specific principles.
