Unlearning Ableism: decolonizing and un-shaming disability

In observance of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and Indigenous Disability Awareness Month, the Office of Indigenous Relations is honoured to welcome Emily Anne Brant as our Keynote speaker.

Emily, a Kanyen’kehà:ka woman from the Turtle Clan in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory will share insights from her personal experiences as a person with a disability. Drawing on her work at the University of Waterloo in inclusive communications and lived experience with indigeneity and disability, Emily will highlight the connection between decolonization and un-shaming disability/unlearning ableism.

This event is open to all UWaterloo students, employees, retirees, alumni and the local Indigenous and ally community.

The in-person event will offer tea, coffee and strawberry drink. Online, we will have live captioning and a moderator to help facilitate your questions. 

About Emily

Emily Anne Brant (she/her) is Kanyen’kehà:ka (Mohawk), Turtle Clan from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. She is an Inclusive Communications Manager working for the Office of Indigenous Relations at University of Waterloo. Emily is a speaker and author, passionate about the topics of decolonization, personal development, and how the two intersect. With lived experience of mixed ancestry (Mohawk, Algonquin and European-settler) and multiple disabilities (scoliosis, clubbed feet, beals syndrome) Emily brings a unique perspective as she blends personal insights with broader teachings and learnings.
