About the Office of Indigenous Relations

The Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR) is an Indigenous led academic support unit at the University of Waterloo. The OIR was established in 2020 to support the University’s commitment to Indigenizing and decolonizing research, teaching, and administration. The University of Waterloo has publicly acknowledged its responsibility to teach our campus community and the broader public about the history and consequences of colonization, and to create a respectful path forward towards reconciliation. As one part of that journey, the Office of Indigenous Relations works closely with the University’s faculty, staff, and students to support teaching and research that is grounded in decolonization.

About the Position

The research assistant will work with the Director, Indigenous Faculty Relations to support research activities with a focus on sustaining existing initiatives and the development of new research directions that support OIR’s core mission. Duties will include collaborating on the following:

  • Research and qualitative/quantitative analysis to support OIR projects and reports;
  • Literature reviews and environment/best practices scans;
  • Supporting grant proposal research and writing;
  • Development of a knowledge mobilization and dissemination strategy;
  • Logistical support for research events and presentations.

Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) applicants with lived experience of Indigenous world views, cultures and values and strong ties to First Nations, Métis and/or Inuk (Inuit) communities;
  • Full-time Masters or Doctoral student enrolled at the University of Waterloo;
  • Education and/or professional experience in Indigenous governance and policy;
  • Familiarity and/or experience with social science research paradigms and methods;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to work in team settings and independently.
