Careers Beyond Academia: What to do after your grad degree?
The Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology Graduate Student Society (WINGS2) has partnered with WNC 2019 for a career panel targeted toward nano-research based graduate students. All WNC attendees are welcome to attend, but points of discussion will be focused on what career options there are after a graduate level degree in engineering or science. Our panelists have a wide range of advanced degrees and each have unique career paths. Government, consultancy and industrial research are all options that WNC delegates can learn more information about.

Panelists
Adam Bergren, PhD
Senior Research Officer
Team Leader, Detection and Automation
Nanotechnology Research Centre
National Research Council Canada
Edmonton, AB
Adam Bergren was born and raised in rural Minnesota, USA, but has roots in rural Saskatchewan, and is a dual US/Canadian citizen. He attended Southwest Minnesota State University, earning a degree in Chemistry in 2001. He then attended Iowa State University, where he graduated with a PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 2006, carrying out studies on electrochemistry across nanoscale molecular layers. After graduating, he moved to Edmonton, Alberta, to work on molecular electronics at the University of Alberta, and in 2007 joined the NRC as a Research Officer. Together with Professor Richard McCreery at the University of Alberta, he is the co-inventor of the first practical and commercial use of molecular electronics: a hybrid nanoscale analog distortion-generating device that creates Rock-and-Roll-infused sound waves through control of current at the nanoscale. His current interests are in light-responsive and light-emitting nanoscale electronic devices, and adaptive optics for astronomy. In 2015, he co-founded Nanolog Audio, Inc., which makes molecular electronic components for guitar pedals, and has its own line of guitar distortion effects pedals. He serves as the company’s president and product designer. Dr. Bergren is the author of over 25 scientific articles, 6 book chapters, and has 2 granted patents.
Carley Miki, MSc
Research Scientist
Mirexus Biotechnologies Inc, &
Cross affiliated with the University of Guelph
Guelph, ON
Carley completed her B.Sc in Nanoscience at the University of Guelph in 2012 and M.Sc in Physics at McMaster University in 2014. Shortly after, she joined Mirexus Biotechnologies Inc., a start-up aiming to commercialize a new, safe and natural nanotechnology discovered at the University of Guelph. As a Research Scientist at Mirexus, Carley’s work has focused on developing new applications for Mirexus’ proprietary nanomaterial for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Carley is currently working at the University of Guelph on a related project, investigating some of the fundamental properties of this material.
