IT Advisory Board meeting - June 2018 (1/2)

We met with our new group for the Spring term to discuss what social media channels they use, and to give feedback on IST Communications

We asked our group to rank the social media channels they use for receiving information (1 being most used)

  1. Facebook
  2. Instagram
  3. Twitter
  4. Snapchat
  5. Linkedin

How should IST utilize social media?

  • Don't post too often
  • Messages should be short and simple
  • Some students do read UW posts, IST could join first year groups on facebook and engage with students there
  • Twitter is not really used by most students, but it's nice that its logged - twitter should still be used
  • Facebook chat bot could be a very good idea for students to get notices / ask simple questions
  • Reddit is not a good tool for communicating to students, there are the anonymity causes problems
  • Using text messages to interact with students is likely too costly, and may annoy students

We asked them to tell us what some small wins might be from a communications perspective

  • Digital displays are expensive and no more effective than regular posters
  • Utilize IST owned "space" like advertising or spreading messages by setting desktop backgrounds on podium computers
  • Infographics (How-to-connect to wifi, etc) in public spaces

Our team generally acknowledged the challenges surrounding communication and agreed that there is no one-size fits all approach.
