Welcome to the Motion Research Group

Welcome to the website for the Motion Research Group in the Department of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo directed by Professor John McPhee. We specialize in dynamic simulation, model-based control, and design optimization of mechanical, mechatronic, and biomechatronic multibody systems.

  1. May 23, 2024MoRG's exoskeleton research featured at the Ontario Biomechanics Conference (OBC)

Research on "muscle activity following postural perturbations wearing a lower limb exoskeleton" by Claudia Town, Keaton InkolJohn McPhee, and Andrew Laing was featured at the 2024 Ontario Biomechanics Conference.

  2. Mar. 12, 2024MoRG research in baseball and hockey featured on the LA Times

A baseball pitching robot that spun out of the Motion Research Group (now Trajekt Sports), as well as a hockey slapshot robot (THoR), were recently featured on the Los Angeles Times.

  3. Feb. 22, 2024John McPhee featured on the CRAM podcast

John McPhee, Professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo and the Canada Research Chair in Biomechatronic System Dynamics, joined Mary Ito on the CRAM podcast to discuss his research on improving electric and autonomous vehicles, developing exoskeletons for stroke patients, and increasing the performance of Olympic and pro athletes.
