Proud Waterloo graduates create alumni chapters at home and overseas.
Waterloo recently celebrated the launch of two new alumni chapters. Driven by passionate volunteers, these organizations offer a wide variety of activities for alumni and for students on co-op and exchange terms. From career panels to sports nights, chapter events connect Waterloo’s global community to the University and each other by welcoming them into our alumni network beyond Ring Road.
After broad consultation in 2018, Waterloo established a new Hong Kong alumni chapter. Respecting and celebrating the history of community building by the independent alumni association, the new chapter supports the University as it engages with alumni, prospective students and partners to apply expertise to pressing problems and innovations.
The chapter proudly kicked off their activities with a thought-provoking evening featuring a panel of local alumni entrepreneurs.
“The launch event was a great way to share the energy, passion and dedication of our alumni in Hong Kong,” says the leadership team. “We’re looking forward to growing and strengthening our alumni community in the area.”

A crowd of 200 guests attended the launch of Waterloo’s new Toronto chapter, the University’s largest alumni organization to date. At the event, President Feridun Hamdullahpur asked the question on everyone’s mind: “Why haven’t we had a chapter until now!” While the President joked that Waterloo had been busy winning a Nobel Prize, everyone agreed that this was the right time to share Waterloo’s unique story with new audiences, and to have the volunteer leadership in place to create meaningful connections between our alumni.
“It’s harder to build a network in Toronto,” says chapter co-leader Anne-Marie Marais (BES ’95). “I really want alumni to feel at ease connecting with each other and potential innovators.”
