Ten startups from the University of Waterloo will pitch their innovative ideas at the Velocity Fund Finals this week for the chance to win one of four prizes worth $25,000. Velocity is a comprehensive entrepreneurship program at Waterloo.

Judges will present one winner with an additional $10,000 for the top hardware pitch. Another 10 startups will compete for one of three awards worth $5,000.

Companies competing for the Fall 2015 Velocity Fund $25K are:

  • Acorn Cryotech preserves the cells of youthful people today as a resource to draw from for personalized medical therapy in the future. This provides a bank of youthful cells, for use in genetic therapies that reverse damage that occurs with age.
  • Arc home is designing a smart vent system, which works with a smart thermostat to control the temperature of individual rooms in your home, preventing uncomfortable temperature differences and reducing home energy bills by up to 30 per cent.
  • Dabbabi develops new motorcycle technologies to improve performance and safety monitoring on the race track and on public roads.
  • Doppel Move helps athletes train by quantifying individual movement patterns by means of a smart garment, which detects detrimental movements in their infancy, and ensures safe practice by means of vibratory feedback cues.
  • HealthIM synchronizes law enforcement and health care systems to improve the quality of care for persons with mental illness, using a clinical reporting system that integrates directly into existing police hardware.
  • Nashwaak is building GPU-powered data tools for high-speed spatial analysis and visualization, focusing on spatial operators and fast mapping techniques.
  • NERv is developing implantable bio-sensors that operate from within the human body. They collect data about the body and send feedback to the doctor, allowing medical care facilities to have a portable bio-lab able to assess the human body.
  • Penta Medical is developing a medical fabric that promotes faster healing, reduces inflammation, alleviates musculoskeletal related pain, and is antibacterial.
  • Sweat Free Apparel is a high-tech company for apparel, producing under-garments that prevent sweat stains from reaching and ruining your clothes.
  • Thalo is building a new display technology to increase the battery life and daylight visibility of mobile devices.

Finalists pitching for the Fall 2015 Velocity Fund $5K are:

  • BioFlex Implant seeks to fix two major issues with current titanium intramedullary implants by using biodegradable polymers to create flexible intramedullary nails for pediatric orthopedic surgery.
  • Comvo is changing the commentary experience in major league sports by allowing fans to listen to, or provide, real-time commentary from within the community.
  • EZBot is developing a robotics platform that is able to control a variety of hardware components through Bluetooth.
  • Finuvo is developing an automated painting station to enable hobbyists and designers to create visually stunning parts by applying a variety of colors and patterns to the surface.
  • Food Not Waste redistributes surplus food from restaurants and food retailers to community organizations, reducing food waste and feeding those in need.
  • Hash is an iPhone application that connects to your desktop device and web extensions in order to successfully authenticate several user accounts seamlessly using your fingerprint via touch ID.
  • Landmine Boys is building an autonomous machine to defuse land mines safely and without detonation, while also saving the land to use for farming.
  • Minverva Tech is working to develop an accurate method for police officials to use when testing for marijuana intoxication when driving.
  • PianoShelf is a next-generation platform for piano players, with sheet music you can share and view anywhere, and social collaboration tools to revolutionize learning.
  • Repleno Labs is developing the world’s first slow charger, which intelligently monitors phone battery health.

Time:  The $5K competition starts at 11 a.m. The $25K competition starts at 1 p.m., with the event wrapping at 3 p.m.
