With close to 60,000 guests expected, more food trucks than ever before and an expanded roster of free children’s activities, this year is set to be the University of Waterloo’s largest Canada Day celebration yet.
Coming off a spectacular 30th anniversary last year, Waterloo region’s premiere Canada Day celebration is proud to present shining examples of Canadian musical talent. Kim Mitchell, Canadian rock icon and hit machine, and The Strumbellas, a Juno-Award-winning, six-piece, folk pop-grass band, will both perform on the OpenText Stage.
The event starts at 4:00 p.m. with kids’ programming and field entertainment. Musical acts start at 7:00 p.m.
Families are welcome to explore a variety of fun and interactive activities for all ages. From face painting and arts and crafts, to inflatable obstacle courses, there is fun for everyone. The TVOKids Stage showcases children's music duo, Bobs & LoLo, and Gisèle Corinthios, the much-loved host of Gisèle’s Big Backyard.
“Our Canada Day celebration is an opportunity to connect with those closest to us — our community," said Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo. "Canada's most innovative university takes pride in celebrating this great country we call home.”
The celebration also features refreshments to suit everyone’s taste. With more than 20 food vendors on hand, including Ish & Chips, Schmuck Truck, West of Seoul and the Bombshelter Pub, all hungry appetites will be easy to tame. For those who don’t want to go for a soda, the Waterloo Brewing Co. Beer Garden offers a place to enjoy frosty suds on a summer’s day.
“The Federation of Students is pleased to play a key role in this annual celebration,” said Chris Lolas, president of Feds. “Canada Day is a chance for the students and residents in Waterloo region to enjoy themselves, and show appreciation for our country and community. This is a dynamic event showcasing the spirit of volunteerism by our students and vibrant culture in the city. Feds has more than 70 students volunteering to make Canada Day 2015 truly memorable.”

All campus parking lots are open and free of charge on Canada Day. Accessible parking is available off of Frank Tompa Drive within the OpenText parking lot.
Columbia Street West from Westmount Road to Hagey Boulevard will be closed on July 1.
