Devon Rizzo is graduating this spring with an engineering degree and a legacy of athletic achievement that includes gold medals and  participation in golf tournaments around the world.

“Golfing for the Warriors has helped me become a better leader. Being a team captain helped me both in the classroom and on the course,” said Rizzo.

Rizzo, a new grad of Waterloo’s management engineering program, was also named the 2014 Waterloo female athlete of the year and continues to excel on the national stage earning a spot on team Canada at the FISU World University games this summer in Gwangju, Korea.

“She is the type of student-athlete all coaches dream of having on their roster,” said Warrior head coach Carla Munch.  “From day one, Devon has been a pleasure to coach.”

Waterloo grad sets provincial golf record

Rizzo joined the Warriors in 2010, a rookie year where she collected three Ontario University Athletics (OUA) individual gold medals. She also shot the lowest score in OUA women’s golf history twice, while leading Waterloo to their first ever OUA championship title.

The following season Rizzo again led her team to the top as the Warriors won their second straight OUA banner.  In 2012, Rizzo captured the University/College golf championship which qualified her to compete in the World Golf Championship in Czech Republic.

Rizzo has reached the pinnacle in OUA golf earning a spot on the all-star team for five straight seasons while winning the individual title once in 2013.

For Rizzo, the University experience at Waterloo has played a key role in her success.

“Waterloo was a perfect fit for me because it offered exactly the program I was looking for and had a high profile golf team,” said Rizzo. “Once I met Carla, the choice became clear and I am so glad I made the call to come to Waterloo.”

Rizzo plans on completing an MBA in the next few years and staying connected with the women’s golf team to help guide other Warrior student-athletes
