Critical research into health care operations, medical imaging systems, micro-nano devices for cancer detection and smart energy distribution received a boost with four University of Waterloo engineering professors receiving new and renewed appointments as Canada Research Chairs today.

The appointments add more than $2 million in funding to the University.

Three Minute Thesis Finals

Graduate students present their research at conferences, lab meetings and committee meetings. They can also share their research at the University of Waterloo’s Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.

The innovative event, being held at the Humanities Theatre in Hagey Hall on March 27 from 2:30 until 4 p.m., gives students the opportunity to explain the significance of their research to a general audience in three minutes using one static slide.

University of Waterloo honours top co-op students

A student who designed a study that showed a prostate cancer centre reduced by two months the time from suspicion of cancer to treatment, is among six outstanding co-op students that the University of Waterloo will honour as part of National Co-op Week.

One co-op student from each of the University's six faculties will receive the 2013 University of Waterloo Co-op Student of the Year Award. The honour is as a result of exemplary performance during a 2013 work term and other factors, including community involvement, contribution to co-op, and academic achievement.

Waterloo alumnus going for Olympic gold again

Greg Westlake has already experienced the glory of winning an Olympic gold and he wants nothing less when he leads Canada’s National sledge hockey team in Sochi.

“Anything less than a gold medal will be disappointing,” says Westlake, who won a gold at the Paralympic Games in Torino in 2006. “We have the talent and drive to win a gold medal, so I know in my heart that if we don't get that, then we probably under-performed.”

Loving to Learn: What makes a teacher a really GREAT teacher?

Everyone from parents to politicians have an opinion about improving education. But when it comes to great teachers, it seems students are the experts.

This year, Waterloo’s Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE) asked local students: What makes a teacher a really GREAT teacher? The question is part of the centre’s annual Loving to Learn Day, an initiative that started in 2006 and has spread to other universities across Canada and as far as Australia.
