Hemant Arora

Ph.D. Candidate

Hemant has obtained his bachelor degree in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, (BHU) and a master's degree in Water Management from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. He is a recipient of TU Delft Institute Climate Scholarship. For his master’s thesis, he has worked on the operational aspects of Slow Sand Filters (SSF) in collaboration with Dunea, A Dutch water utility. He has worked on Optimizing the Ripening period (formation of biological layer on sand bed) of SSF by varying the operational parameters.

Personal Profile

Michele joined the NSERC Chair in Water Treatment as a Research Associate and Senior Microbiologist in 2004. Her research investigates pathogen occurrence in watersheds, and removal and treatment of microorganisms by water disinfection strategies.

Lin Shen

Lin received her Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours from the University of Waterloo in 2016, focusing on Environmental Science (Ecology). She also received her Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing (2016), majoring in Environmental Engineering.

Lin joined the NSERC Chair group in Fall 2016 and is investigating hardness reduction in groundwater wells under the supervision of Drs. Peldszus and Huck.

Lorena Baku

Lorena completed her Master’s in Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology at the University of Waterloo. Previous to that, Lorena worked as a project manager in the field of cancer research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - University Health Network. Also, she received her undegraduate degree in nursing from Toronto Metropolitan University (previously Ryerson University) and worked as a nurse for a period of time before transitioning to project management.

Personal Profile

Sabrina Bedjera received her BSc. with honours from The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in 2014, focusing on biology and mathematics. Her thesis project looked at the effect of an urbanization gradient on diatom community structure and periphyton biomass in Oshawa Creek.

Sabrina is now pursuing her Master’s under the supervision of Dr. Sigrid Peldszus on predicting the removal of micropollutants in water treatment.

Personal Profile

Katrine Orland Led received her BASc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Aarhus, Denmark in January 2017. She completed a 5 month internship here at the University of Waterloo, as well as 2 terms as an exchange student. Her bachelor thesis was on climate policies influence on air pollution and human health.

Katrine joined the NSERC Chair group in January 2017 to pursue an MASc. in Civil Engineering (Water) and is currently focusing on her courses.

Nastaran received her bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Shiraz University, Iran, and a master's degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of Alberta.

Her current research focuses on drinking water distribution system corrosion, with an emphasis on lead release from corrosion products, and understanding the role of Natural Organic Matter (NOM) in lead release.

Zhanyang (Andy) Gong received his BSc. from the University of Waterloo in 2015. His undergraduate thesis project focused on modilling groundwater flow through porous media. He was also an undergraduate research assistant (URA) working for the NSERC Chair group for one term while he was completing his bachelor's degree.

Jaita Saha

MASc. Candidate

Jaita obtained her B.Sc. in Civil Engineering degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), in October 2018. Her undergraduate research was focused on monitoring potential of iron-coated jute fabrics to decrease arsenic concentration of groundwater in irrigation channels. She worked as a lecturer at Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Bangladesh after graduation.

Ujwal Zore

Ujwal completed his Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, India in 2020. After graduation he worked as a manufacturing engineer at AkzoNobel, a paint and performance coating industry. Ujwal joined the NSERC Chair in Water Treatment research group in May 2021 as a MASc candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Peter Huck and Dr. Sigrid Peldszus.

Paul Markin received a BSc. with Honours in 2014 from the University of British Columbia. His concentration was microbiology. His honours thesis investigated the abundance of nitrogen cycling genes in perennial agricultural soils.

Sina Golchi

Sina Golchi received his BEng. in Chemical Engineering from Science and Research University, Tehran, Iran in June 2018. His capstone project was on carbon quantum dots and their applications. Sigrid Peldszus is a Research Associate Professor and the Chair’s Senior Chemist. She joined the group shortly after its inception in 1993 as a Postdoctoral Fellow after completing her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in Bonn, Germany.

Noshin Nawar Reza
