Resilient Retrofits: Adapting to Climate Change

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) in Nova Scotia engaged Partners for Action at the University of Waterloo to do research on resilient retrofits for HRM specific natural hazards. We are exploring what building features can withstand floods (overland, coastal), extreme precipitation, extreme winds, extreme heat, wildfires, drought, and snow and ice.

Partners for Action is also developing a database of climate adaptation measures for retrofits applicable to Canadian residential buildings for the National Research Council of Canada.

Inclusive Resilience: Driving Risk Awareness to Action and Building Resiliency for Vulnerable Canadians in High-Risk Areas

Public Outreach Research

Before, during and after disasters, the Canadian Red Cross works with people and communities across Canada to strengthen their resilience to disasters. Funded by the Government of Canada through Public Safety Canada, the Driving Risk Awareness to Action and Building Resiliency for Vulnerable Canadians in High-Risk Areas project, commonly referred to as the Inclusive Resilience project seeks to increase awareness of disaster risks and promote inclusive approaches, tools and actions that foster inclusive disaster risk reduction (DRR) and emergency preparedness across Canada.

Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI)

Part of the Inclusive Resilience project in partnership with Canadian Red Cross and funded by Public Safety Canada, this research makes use of a Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI) to map flood risk and identify where the people most impacted live.
