How to apply

You've explored our programs and now you're ready to apply.

Please follow the steps below as you prepare, submit, and review your application to graduate studies.

❗Notice: Waterloo Graduate Studies has implemented a new application system, effective March 5, 2025.

What does this mean for our applicants?

If you started but did not complete (submitted with the application fee paid) an application in our previous system, you will need to complete a new one in our new application system. See the list below of programs that remain open for fall 2025 applications.

Please ensure you are following the correct instructions based on when you submitted your application.

Step 1.

Before you start your application

Please review the information below to help you during this process.

The University of Waterloo is committed to ensuring you can access, and meaningfully participate in, your education. At any point in the application process, or when you are a registered student, we encourage you to reach out to AccessAbility Services for advice, information, and support. Request for disability-based graduate admission accommodation (on the AccessAbility website).

Step 2.

Create an online application account

  • Apply at least two to four weeks ahead of your program's application deadline to ensure you have time to upload your supporting documents, and your referees have time to submit their reference forms.
  • Create an online application account. Note that you may have only one graduate online application account.
  • Provide your first name, last name, email address and date of birth.
  • You will then receive an email with a unique code or PIN to finish setting up your account.
  • Using the link from the email, input the PIN and other required information to verify your identity and create a password.
  • Log in with your email address and password. You can reset your password from the application login page if you forget it.

Please direct any online application account process questions to our graduate application team gradapply@uwaterloo.ca.

Step 3.

Start your online application

  • From the Welcome page, choose the START NEW APPLICATION button or access a saved application by selecting the Graduate Application link.
    • The graduate application has several sections that must be completed before submission. You can begin the application and save at any point, returning to complete it before the application deadline.
  • Enter your personal information and select your program: choose one "attendance type" (full-time or part-time) and one "type of program" (research paper, coursework, or thesis). If you would like to be considered for more than one option, please contact the program directly after you've applied.
  • Enter the required application information.
    • Academic Background: you may upload a copy of your transcripts as you complete this section.
    • Referees: you may enter your referee information and send the request right away or save it to send later.
  • In the Graduate Studies Applicant Portal, pay the non-refundable application fee of $125 CAD per program via the link in your portal.

Step 4.

Upload your application documents through your Applicant Portal

  • Once you have submitted your application you will be directed to your Applicant Portal to pay the application fee, upload your application materials and track the status of your application.
  • Under Application Checklist you will see a list of the application materials you need to upload and complete based on your program.
  • Once you have uploaded all of your required documents, and your referees have completed their reference forms, your application is complete.

How to apply (for applications completed before February 1, 2025)

Create your Waterloo student account (Quest)

  • One to two business days after you have completed the online application and the fee has been processed, you will receive an email from us with instructions for claiming your identity (user ID and password) to access Quest, the University of Waterloo’s student information system.
  • The email will include your 8-digit Waterloo student ID number. This is the ID number you will use for all Waterloo inquiries. Please note that your Quest user ID is different from your Waterloo student ID number.
  • Before you can log in to Quest, you will need to create your user ID and password by claiming your account in WatIAM, the University of Waterloo’s identity and access management system.
  • Once you have claimed (activated) your user ID and password, you will be able to log in to Quest.
  • You will use Quest to upload your application documents, update your contact information, view your admission decision and, if applicable, view/accept/decline your offer of admission. Visit the Quest Graduate applicants page for additional step-by-step instructions.

Upload your application documents to the University of Waterloo through Quest

  • Once you have accessed your Quest account, you can upload your application documents. To do so, log in to Quest, navigate to Admissions and select Documents in your Student Center.
  • You will see a list of the documents you need to upload and complete based on your program.
  • Once you have uploaded all of your required documents, and your referees have completed their reference forms, your application is complete.
    • Your document status will change from “Initiated” to “Completed” under your documents list in Quest.
