Connection Desk Assistant at Moose Tracks (1 position)

Open to international students who qualify through the International Work-Study program

Renison University College proudly offers the Moose Tracks Connection Desk – a front desk to support students. This service will be staffed by student leaders to provide front-line support specifically to Renison and University of Waterloo students.

We are hiring students in the role of Connection Desk Assistant for the Spring 2024 term. The Connection Desk Assistant will work a rotating schedule with other staff between the hours of 9:00am to 7:30pm Monday to Friday. The Connection Desk Assistants will assist in the coordination of front-line customer service for student inquiries, as well as supporting the Renison Student Experience and Housing team with projects related to administrative support. This role requires excellent customer service and communication skills, and a sincere desire to help others.

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to enhance their client/customer service skills, while developing strong project management skills. The candidate will work collaboratively with multiple partners throughout Renison, including program managers and administrative staff, Student Experience and Housing staff, residence dons, and student peer leaders.

Role & Responsibilities

As a Connection Desk Assistant, you will assist students with:

  • Providing way-finding support throughout the college, including locating classrooms and common spaces throughout the college
  • Supporting navigational advice to students for who to speak with regarding their courses at Renison as well as University of Waterloo student services
  • Provide information about Renison events, including help with registration
  • Daytime support with residence questions, including booking pool cues and ping pong paddles for the Moose Room
  • The purchase of snacks, essential items, and Renison merchandise

Provide Front-line Support for Students

  • Serve as a warm, welcoming, and accessible first point-of-contact to support students with their questions, provide direction, and assist with sales as necessary.
  • Assist students in meeting their social, academic and personal needs, and provide campus referrals to appropriate student services when needed.
  • Reinforce and role model an inclusive and welcoming environment that allows students to feel comfortable to approach with questions or concerns.

Documentation and Administration

  • Support staff with administrative tasks and responsibilities, including inputting meeting notes, survey result data, and providing analysis of survey data findings.
  • Where necessary, support pre-program logistics and preparations (gathering event materials, creating and posting signage, etc.).

Communications

  • Respond to all communications, including emails and virtual calls, from students and staff within one business day. Please note you may have to reply earlier for issues that need immediate attention.
  • Consistently provides timely and professional updates to staff and campus partners as it pertains to job-related duties and responsibilities.

Rate of Pay

The position works 6-10 hours per week and is compensated at $16.55 per hour. 

Qualifications

  • Outstanding customer-service orientation, and adaptable to work in busy environments.
  • Experienced student leader with a strong knowledge of the University of Waterloo campus, Faculties, services, and resources.
  • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple demands simultaneously while remaining detailorientated and professional.
  • Displays excellent problem-solving skills, strong judgement, professionalism, adaptability, and diplomacy. • Experience participating in international or cross-cultural living and learning opportunities; approaches cross-cultural communication and inter-group dynamics with sensitivity and respect.

Lusi Wong Library Assistant (1 position)

Open to international students who qualify through the International Work-Study program

Role & Responsibilities

The Library Assistant will provide library supervision and support for one 4-hour evening shift and one 3-hour lunch shift weekly.

Responsibilities include:

  • Shelving books
  • Shelf-reading assigned sections
  • Checking out materials at circulation
  • Helping students with their printing
  • Assisting students with research using library resources/catalogue
  • Answering questions about the campus and buildings
  • Closing the library at the end of the night
  • Booking study rooms
  • Ensure proper use of library facilities
  • Complete special projects as assigned

Rate of Pay

The position works 3-6 hours per week in May and June, and 7-10 in July and August, and is compensated at $16.55 per hour. 

Qualifications

  • Customer service experience
  • Comfortable working independently and intervening when patrons may be violating food, safety or noise standards
  • Knowledge of library services – comfortable helping others find materials an asset

Facilities & Event Support Assistant (1 position)

Open to domestic students who qualify through the Domestic Student Work-Study program

Role & Responsibilities

The Facilities and Event Support Assistant is a front-line member of the Renison Facilities team who provides physical labour and support for event set-up of college events; supporting Renison Facilities by providing physical labour to move office furniture and materials; liaising with Conferences, Food Services, and Housekeeping for various requests, and; providing physical support in Renison Residence with maintenance and cleaning issues as concerns arise. The position is ideal for a student residing in Renison Residence who can be called upon request to support as issues arise, in addition to scheduled work.

The incumbent is responsible for receiving and executing directions for room set-up, take down, and light janitorial duties. The incumbent must demonstrate strong verbal communication skills, listening skills, and professionalism to be able to interact in a professional and courteous manner within a team setting. Additionally, the incumbent will represent Renison in a manner consistent with the values, goals, and strategic directions of the University College.

The position is accountable to the Manager of Facilities and Assistant Director, Student Experience and Housing.

As a Facilities and Event Support Assistant you will support with:

Special event set-up

  • Receive and execute directions about the physical set-up of classrooms and meeting spaces for special events.
  • Move furniture, set up tables, and assist with navigating equipment while maintaining personal safety as well as care and concern for Renison property.
  • Liaise with various departments including Student Experience and Housing, Food Services, Janitorial and Housekeeping staff, and Facilities staff.
  • Respond to unforeseen circumstances that occur during events by assisting with cleaning up and tidying as necessary.

Grounds work and Facilities support

  • Provide support for seasonal grounds maintenance such as spring and fall clean-up, trash pick-up, etc.

Responding to Facilities and Housekeeping inquiries

  • With provided training, support with maintenance and housekeeping inquiries as they arise when necessary for Residence building during evening and weekend hours when Facilities staff may not be available, including support with plunging toilets, cleaning unexpected messes and spills, providing towels or linens as needed, replacing fire alarm batteries, etc.
  • Supporting Facilities staff with moving office furniture, boxes, or belongings throughout the college when office moves are required.

Rate of Pay

The position works 2-3 hours per week and is compensated at $16.55 per hour. 

Qualifications

  • Current Renison or UWaterloo student; preference will be given to current Renison residents
  • Strong verbal communication skills and listening skills, and ability to interact in a professional and courteous manner
  • Proven track record of accountability and the ability to take initiative, with a strong level of responsibility and care required when completing work.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a team setting.
