Ph.D positions
Announcing a fully-funded 4-year PhD position available in the Glaciology Group at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. We are seeking a student for a field-based project examining Yukon surging glaciers to be supervised by Dr. Christine Dow and Dr. Wes Van Wychen. The position is available from January 2021 onwards. You will be joining the University of Waterloo Glaciology Group, which is a diverse and interdisciplinary group currently hosting 9 MSc and PhD students, and 2 postdoctoral fellows.
Project Description:
The Yukon has many surging glaciers with a variety of dynamic behaviours that have impacts on local water resources and can potentially cause hazards in the form of rapid lake drainage events. We seek to determine why some glaciers in this region surge and why others do not. We are looking for a PhD student to pursue this science question using a variety of techniques including (but not limited to): collecting and analysing glacier borehole data, installing state-of-the-art wireless instrumentation, and flying a drone to gather surface melt data. These data sets can be expanded upon with remote sensing and/or modeling tools as the project develops. The successful candidate will have evidence of previous field experience, a keen interest in glacier dynamics, and numerical skills applicable to in situ data analysis.
Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Geography, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
Experience using MATLAB, Python, ArcGIS, and related software for scientific purposes would be highly beneficial.
Field experience is considered an asset.
