This course studies folk fairy tales in the broader context of their cultural history, both in terms of their origins and in terms of how we continue to make them relevant. It also examines the features that folklore scholars and literary scholars use to define and to interpret folk fairy tales. The course will concentrate on the German and Russian context, and in particular on the work of the Brothers Grimm and Alexander Afanasyev.
