“Post–Ostalgie 'Retro' in Graupner and Wüstefeld’s Das UPgrade, at Retro! Time, Memory, Nostalgia: The Ninth International Graphic Novel and Comics Conference 2018, Bournemouth, UK, Thursday, June 28, 2018

Das UPgrade is a projected ten-volume series—now three volumes in—about the only superhero of the now-defunct German Democratic Republic. Ronny Knäusel is born in Dresden in 1967; thanks to alien intervention five millennia ago, an experimental GDR fertility pill, and an American surf-rock song playing on the radio, Ronny can teleport himself and others—but only when he hears the Beach Lords' hit "Palms in Sorrow." A library guide for the documentation and reporting of a systematic grey literature search, at CHLA Annual Conference, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, Sunday, June 17, 2018

Authors: Stapleton, J.

Performing a systematic grey literature search can be problematic as these forms of publication are often unorganized and lack systematic search tools. This is a particular problem in public health as research questions often involve synthesis of information not published in the traditional peer reviewed journal article. A public health librarian created a tool to aid researchers through the process of conducting a grey literature search. It provides...

Deep Learning for Lost Data Restoration and Imputation, at SSC 2018, Monday, June 4, 2018

Lossy, noisy, or missing data are a common phenomena in many areas of statistics ranging from sampling to statistical learning. Instead of just ignoring these missing values, it can be useful to somehow attempt to recover or impute them. Meanwhile, deep learning is increasingly shown to be adept at learning latent representations or distributions of data. These patterns or representations can often be too complex to be recognized manually or through classical statistical techniques. We will discuss practical deep learning approaches to the problem of lossy data restoration or imputation...
