John has held a wide variety of scientific advisory positions, including co-chair of the sub-committee that assesses extinction risk of marine fishes for the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), the body that advises the federal government on listing decisions for the Species at Risk Act.
