August Blue Drinks is cancelled!

Unfortunately our regular monthly Blue Drinks event is cancelled tomorrow, August 30th. The Grad House is closed tomorrow as is the Bombshelter pub, and we were unable to find a suitable place to hold it instead in time.

We are cancelling this one but hope to see everyone at the Blue Drinks in September, last Tuesday of the month, usual time and place. We will also feature a special guest at the September Blue Drinks to talk a bit about water and interact with SWIGS members, stay tuned for more details!

There is a great opportunity for SWIGS members or others to help water researchers by conducting interviews in Long Point, Lake Erie this summer. Roy Brouwer and Noémie Neverre are looking for one more person to conduct interviews from approximately July 4th to August 14th. The purpose is to elicit public participation and opinion about the increasing presence of Phragmites in Long Point.

Participating in the study involves:

In co-operation with the Students of the Water Institute Graduate Section (SWIGS), an instrumentation group has been formed on Facebook for users of chromatography and mass spectrometry instruments (named the 'UW LC/IC/GC-MS Users' group). This is an excellent resource for users of these instruments that want to ask other students about their troubles or offer advice to less experienced students.

SWIGS has been busy!

Before many students left for field research over the summer, we organized a rock-climbing event at Grand River Rocks which was a great success! Several are now regular climbers! Over the summer, we hosted a water fight with reusable sponges in front of the Grad House to get students thinking about water availability and use. Students were later challenged to some water trivia for great prizes!
