Chinese New Year is being celebrated on February 19 this year and the University of Waterloo campus community will be getting off to an early start by holding the sixth annual Spring Festival Gala on February 13.

The gala, hosted by the University of Waterloo Chinese Students and Scholars Association (UWCSSA), will be held at the Humanities Theatre in Hagey Hall starting at 7 pm.

This is the most important cultural event for the UWCSSA and globally more than a billion people will usher in the New Year with festivities.

To celebrate this ancient tradition, UWCSSA is hosting a three-hour show that consists of vocal and dance performances, a magic and fashion show, as well as comedy and dramatic performances.  All of the shows are performed by University students. The annual event attracts more than 800 people each year.  Public figures, business people, and pop stars are also invited to join the celebration, with past honored guests including Weiya Xu, the Counselor of Education from the Consulate General of China in Toronto.  This year, there will be special performances by the Stars of Voice of China.

Founded in 2006, the UWCSSA is an independent, non-profit student organization.  As the largest Chinese student’s organization in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, UWCSSA is dedicated to providing various services to Chinese students in the Waterloo region.
