STARTED

In response to provincial government recommendations, the University of Waterloo developed its Commercialization Mandate Agreement (CMA) framework to illustrate how the institution is protecting and commercializing intellectual property (IP) for the benefit of Ontario. This is a multi-step initiative. The Office of Research consulted with faculties, executive leaders, and members of the entrepreneurship ecosystem to complete the first step of the CMA framework in April 2022 — a campus website outlining the institution’s IP and commercialization policies, activities, and support services, framed in the context of providing benefit to Ontario.

Moving forward: Waterloo will continue to implement the next steps of the CMA framework. This includes working with the provincial government to identify IP metrics that will be used to monitor University IP activities (by December 2022) and select targets (expected in 2023).
