Creating a student-driven food security strategy
Addresses objectives: C1B Nurture relationships and create a community of learners
According to a Meal Exchange report, 30 to 40 per cent of students on Canadian university campuses suffer from food insecurity, which can negatively impact their academic performance. More than fifty campus stakeholders attended the Wellness Collaborative Community of Practice in December 2021 to explore the issue and identify potential approaches to address food insecurity. Following the meeting, Campus Wellness and Food Services collaborated with the University of Guelph and the University of British Columbia to successfully recruit racialized students for a digital storytelling workshop — Elevating Voices of Food Insecurity. Once produced, these stories will be screened with target audiences.

Moving forward: A Food Security Strategy Working Group will be convened to focus on this important area. The group will use data from several sources, including survey data from Meal Exchange and the Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey, to inform the development of the food security strategy.
