Building wellness into the learning envrionmentÂ
Addresses objectives: C1B Nurture relationships and create a community of learners
Wellness at the University of Waterloo includes providing a healthy learning environment for students so they can study and work to their full potential in a place where autonomy, self-esteem, purpose, hope, and social connectedness are fostered. In 2021-2022, the Wellness Collaborative consulted with academic support units and senior leaders and identified Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a key approach for achieving an overall positive experience and equal access for all students. UDL is the purposeful design of course outcomes, materials, and assessments that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Moving forward: In 2022-2023 the Wellness Collaborative will partner with Campus Wellness, Centre for Teaching Excellence (CTE), Centre for Extended Learning (CEL) and teaching fellows to promote knowledge and awareness about UDL, including at the May 2022 Waterloo Teaching and Learning Conference. The collaborative is partnering with other academic support units to create a UDL Community of Practice to increase awareness and uptake of UDL as a strategy to promote well-being in learning across campus.
