Waterloo is committed to the 17 interconnected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in all areas of its practice — teaching, research, operations, and community engagement. In 2021, the THE Impact Ranking program ranked Waterloo 53rd university in the world overall, 53rd in the world for climate action (SDG 13), and 55th in the world for SDG partnerships (SDG 17). This ranking program tends to be volatile, however Waterloo will continue to use it as one way to monitor its progress in UN SDGs.

In April 2022 the University launched its first report explicitly tracking how it is contributing to the UN SDGs across these areas through a dedicated website. This report builds an important preliminary understanding of how Waterloo is aligning its academic mission and operational practices to solving global challenges and will help inform future efforts. Waterloo is the host of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network in Canada, collaborating with other university campuses to define best practices to increase SDG transparency and reporting across the sector.

Moving forward: Waterloo’s SDG website will be updated biennially as evidence of action and progress emerges.
