Implementing the Shift:Neutral climate action plan

Addresses objectives:
C3A Become a role model by fully implementing the environmental sustainability strategy

in progress

Waterloo’s Shift:Neutral climate action plan is a multi-year framework with targets to reduce direct and indirect emissions at Waterloo. In 2021-2022 these actions included developing guidelines for carbon-neutral building design and lifecycle costing, as well as completing a campus-wide energy audit. Waterloo initiated five pilot projects: a faucet aerator upgrade, accelerated repair of steam traps, subsidies for electric vehicles, a submetering pilot, and a feasibility study on decarbonizing the district energy system. Together these actions will help Waterloo reduce carbon emissions and build institutional capacity for further action.

Moving forward: Waterloo will continue to add more detail to long, medium, and short-term greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction roadmaps, and will seek innovative ways to mobilize resources and catalyze action across the institution. By 2025, the goal of the plan is to reduce Scope 1 / 2 (direct and energy) GHG emissions by 17.5 per cent.
