Developing strategic direction for the Indigenous relations portfolio
Addresses objectives: C4A Act upon the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions recommendations and calls to action and build relationships with the local Indigenous community
In 2021-2022, the newly formed Office of Indigenous Relations began developing Waterloo’s Indigenous strategic plan. The plan integrates the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations for post-secondary education with institutional priorities to create the office’s strategic direction, outlining a full suite of initiatives to achieve the plans goals and objectives. While the plan is being finalized, activities have continued. The focus of the current year has been on building capacity across the institution to support Indigenous initiatives, and support new Indigenous faculty and staff. As an example, Indigenous relations is working alongside the Faculty of Health to integrate Indigenous approaches to learning across the Faculty with support from Health’s first Indigenous Knowledge Keeper. An Indigenous Advisory Circle has been established, work to develop Indigenous research methods and protocols, and inventoried existing Indigenous spaces and initiated work on the Indigenous relations office and other campus spaces.

Moving forward: The Indigenous Strategic Plan is expected to be endorsed by leadership in 2022-2023. Some of the plan’s initiatives are in progress, including the hiring of 10 faculty positions and seven staff and embedding Indigenous perspectives in governance.
