A scholarship, valued at $1,500, will be awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Year Two, Three, or Four of any program in the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Mathematics. Selection is based on academic achievement (minimum 80% cumulative average), combined with a demonstrated interest in the area of computational rhetoric, computational analysis and/or generation of rhetorical concepts and/or persuasive text. Computational rhetoric is a field at the intersection of Natural Language Processing (NLP), persuasion, and stylistics, pioneered at the University of Waterloo by Professor Chrysanne Di Marco, her students, and her collaborators. Interested students should familiarize themselves with the relevant literature, including the works of Di Marco and Professor Randy Harris and must submit an application outlining their interest in computational rhetoric by October 15. This fund is made possible by a donation from alumnus Sam Pasupalak (BCS ’12), in honour of Professor Chrysanne DiMarco’s excellent teaching, mentorship, and for her significant support of Sam’s research.
