Research Officer, Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre, National Research Council Canada
Derek Aranguren van Egmond is a Research Officer specializing in multi-material additive manufacturing of architected energy materials. He leads the Smart Materials for Smart Objects research stream at the NRC’s new Advanced Materials Research Facility in Mississauga, ON. Here, his research deploys advanced manufacturing tools to achieve tailorable material properties in clean energy devices, combining functional chemistry with topology design and optimisation.
Previously, Derek was a researcher with the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Advanced Concepts Team – a multidisciplinary think-tank studying emerging technologies with long term strategic importance for space exploration. Based in the Netherlands, he worked on functional materials for future space infrastructure, developing collaborative projects surrounding e.g., artificial intelligence and in-space manufacturing.
Derek holds a M.A.Sc. degree in materials science and engineering from the University of Toronto (2018), with research focusing on bioinspired design of damage tolerant 3D mechanical metamaterials. He earned his B.Eng. in materials engineering from McGill University.
