Associate Professor, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering

Dr Alfano is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at Waterloo. His research focuses on the mechanics of solid bodies and layered lightweight structures. The interplay between manufacturing and structural performance is a highlight of Marco’s recent research work, which enjoys an even balance between analytical, computational and experimental methods in fracture mechanics. Marco is an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology, the International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives. Marco's recent research has been granted external funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and the National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).

Graduate Supervision:

Marco leads dynamic training programs that enable students to undertake basic and industry-relevant analytical and experimental research. His students receive training in essential research areas, such as mechanics of materials, fracture mechanics (including modelling) and topics in adhesion science and technology.
