Professor | Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering
Stephen L. Smith is a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering where he directs the Autonomous Systems Lab and is a Canada Research Chair in Autonomous Systems. He received his BSc degree from Queen’s University, his MASc degree from the University of Toronto, and his PhD degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to Waterloo, he was a postdoc in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) at MIT. Prof. Smith is a Professional Engineer and serves as an advisor for several start-ups in robotics and automation. His main research interests lie in control and optimization for autonomous systems, with a focus on safe motion planning, and the interaction of humans with autonomy.
Graduate Supervision:
Dr. Smith supervises Master’s and PhD students in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and co-advises students in other engineering departments and within the Faculty of Mathematics. Graduate students are members of the Autonomous Systems Lab, and research aspects of autonomy, motion planning, and human-autonomy interaction.
