Scaling mHealth and wearable technology in Canada

mHealth app and smart watch

Scaling mHealth and Wearable Technology within the Canadian public healthcare system is a very complex issue  that involves various stakeholders. There are certain gaps associated with the perception of risk when it comes to ideating, prototyping, deploying certain healthcare focused technologies. Commercialization and consumerization of  mHealth and wearable technology within the Canadian market is a unique trajectory that needs further assessment and research.. Academic research on commercialization factors behind mHealth and the use of wearable technology is relatively a new field, and there is significance behind defining and further understanding this part of the healthcare system as this is where the future of healthcare is going to head towards.

mHealth is a rapidly growing area of research that has been changing continuously  to meet new technology and needs of the population. As the scope of mHealth grows, so does the diversity of the challenges in the knowledge needed to support the growth (Canada Health Infoway, 2016). Current government regulations surrounding health technology, specially pertaining to mHealth and the use of consumer level wearable tech, are vague and do facilitate sustainable long-term growth (Labajo & Xiao, 2015).

Ensuring outcomes that are reasonable in comparison to expenditures is an important factor in balancing cost-effective health care with new developments.

There are many stakeholders with responsibilities in delivering health care services, developing innovative solutions, and encouraging commercialization, in publicly funded health care systems often results in tension experienced while people advocate for their role.

Through this research project, the goal is to raise awareness to the numerous barriers to mHealth commercialization and to help the audience to:

  • Clearly define the problem space around mHealth and consumer level wearable technology within the Canadian healthcare system.
  • Clearly identify go to market commercialization relevant to the Canadian market.
  • Better understand the complexities of building a go to market strategy in the context of the canadian government and privacy regulations.Better understand the market landscape of mHealth and consumer level wearables within Canada in parallel to the US and European market.

The interviews will take place with innovators, healthcare professionals, policy makers, researchers and leader in the mHealth and eHealth space in Canada to understand how we could commercialize mhealth and eHealth technology in Canada.
