Evelyn Stephens came towards me as I approached the apartment building entrance, my off-campus home while attending The University of Waterloo. "Would you like to work on a coffee house?" she inquired hopefully. The spring term, May to August, had just started. It was my first time enrolling in a full set of courses for the summer, and the stretch of sunny warm days ahead of me seemed endless. I recognized Evelyn from the mathematics building and near our apartment, but I had not talked with her at any length. Without having any idea of what I was getting into, I agreed. It seemed an interesting project, and completely different than the heavy mathematics workload I would otherwise be focusing on.

Black and Indigenous scholars will have new opportunities to advance their research thanks to a commitment of $388,000 to expand the prestigious AMTD Waterloo Global Talent Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

Established by Dr. Calvin Choi (BA ’01, LLD ’21) and the AMTD Charity Foundation in 2019, the $3.4 million program supports emerging global leaders whose research has the potential to dramatically improve society and contribute positively to the world. The fellowship includes a $75,000 annual salary, plus additional funds to engage with communities inside and outside of academia.

This past weekend, more than 1,000 people flooded the University of Waterloo campus to meet with old friends, celebrate milestone anniversaries and see how our institution has changed. The weekend included multiple events, hosted by Alumni Relations, Faculties, Schools, University Colleges and alumni volunteers.

Since 1975, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest has recognized the achievements of hundreds of local women with the K-W Oktoberfest Rogers Women of the Year Awards. In 2023, multiple University of Waterloo alumni and students were nominated as exceptional women in our community. Two alumni and two current students were among the award recipients.

Dear 18-Year-Old Me

That’s a wrap! After five years at the University of Waterloo, I am saying my goodbyes and moving on. I know people will tell you that your time at university will fly by, but you won’t believe them. In the middle of exam season, your time in school will seem endless. But let me tell you, life has a way of sneaking up on you, and before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage at convocation.

How do you speak or learn English quickly and fluently? Would you consider taking an online English speaking course or public speaking classes? Would you consider enrolling in Toastmasters, GRE Vocabulary, ESL sessions, presentation skill training, or even a course on English communication skills training and techniques that claims to transform you into an English guru?
