The late Lyle Hallman (LLD '01) began giving to the poor long before he was a rich man. It was the practice of tithing, modelled by his parents that set the foundation for a lifelong devotion to helping others.

In a funeral tribute to Lyle, the University of Waterloo past president James Downey said: "Lyle's soul and his honour were, in his mind, intimately entwined. And there was no honouring God without the practice of charity, which meant tithing. And tithe he did, throughout his life, and to the benefit of many of the more vulnerable in the several communities of which he was part: church, hospitals, universities, and countless other organizations and individuals."

Lyle, who died in 2003, was a generous and long-time supporter of Waterloo. Most notably, his generous gift to the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences in 1999 launched the Lyle S. Hallman Institute for Health Promotion. The donation meant two wings of research and classroom space could be added to B.C. Matthews Hall. He also served on Conrad Grebel University College's board of governors and was a volunteer for Campaign Waterloo.

Lyle established his own company, Hallman Construction, in 1945, after serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the Second World War. Initially, he renovated homes, then he built homes, and later his company moved into apartment construction and land development. He eventually became the largest private owner of apartment buildings in southwestern Ontario under what became Hallman Property Management.

Lyle was regarded as one of Waterloo Region's most generous benefactors and was given many awards for his service, including being admitted as a member of the Order of Canada in 2001.
