When Robert Brown (BMath '71, MA '94) arrived on campus in 1967, he became one of the first students of the new statistics program, a founding department in the Faculty of Mathematics. Forty years later, Brown is teaching in the statistics and actuarial science department, a program now widely regarded as the best in the world.

"I go internationally, with my head held high," says Brown, a global leader in actuarial science. He is also a favourite among the University of Waterloo math students, who are drawn to his practical approach to teaching.

Brown served as the president of the Society of Actuaries and as president of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. Locally, he was elected to the City of Waterloo council in 1988 and served his community for six years.

"Although Waterloo has had many accomplished graduates in its 50 years, it is hard to imagine one individual who has accomplished more in his professional work, and given more back to the University of Waterloo than has Professor Brown," says Richard London, a colleague who nominated Brown.

Brown's favourite memory as a student was running with the 1969 cross-country team. Brown was part of the University of Waterloo team that won the Ontario championship title and narrowly missed winning the national championship.
