Robert Hunter (BSc '76)

Robert Hunter (BSc '76) has rubbed shoulders with rock stars and royalty, but it's the people he works with every day that give him satisfaction in his career as general manager of the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. "The good and bad about my job is I manage a lot of people, but it is the daily interactions I enjoy the most," says Hunter.

Hunter's social nature has kept him connected to the University of Waterloo, as a fundraiser and organizer of kinesiology class reunions. He's also the Campaign Waterloo chair for the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences team. Hunter is an active member of the National Alumni Council and in the 1990s served as a member of the University of Waterloo's Board of Governors.

Hunter began his career at Ontario Place before moving on to operate the BC Place Stadium. In 1994, he took the helm of the massive Toronto SkyDome as chief executive officer. Three years later, he accepted the position at the Air Canada Centre, and in 1999 he was promoted to senior vice president of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd.

Hunter's experience managing major events such as the World Cup of Hockey in 2004, and huge concerts featuring performers such as Celine Dion and U2, have made him a natural organizer and fundraiser for the University of Waterloo.

In the community, Hunter has served as director of Trillium Health Centre Foundation, and professionally he has served on several boards, including the International Association of Assembly Managers.
