Theatre of the Beat was founded by University of Waterloo grads Johnny Wideman (BA ’09), Rebecca Steiner (BA ’12), Kimberlee Walker (BA ’12), and Leah Harder (BA ’09) in 2011. They got their start on campus, creating a biographical play about Conrad Grebel archivist Sam Steiner (BA ’73). The show was entitled Gadfly: Sam Steiner Dodges the Draft and followed the transformation of a self-proclaimed bigot to social justice activist during the Vietnam war. The company has been ‘staging change’ ever since.

Printing a Labour of Love

Gary Horst and Christina Hörst

When I pulled my daughter's name, Christina Hörst (MA '10), for our Christmas 2017 gift exchange, I recognized I now had fresh motivation to pull a stalled project off the shelf. Her thesis was originally in French, as the title makes obvious: Discours Protestant et Parcours Féminin dans Delphine (1802) de Madame de Staël.

Defining Success Your Way

Laurel Scheller and friends

In the fall of 1980, I sat in Sunny Sundberg's office in Health Services Counseling Centre at the University of Waterloo - a confused 19 year old wondering what I was doing in university, and what life was all about anyways.

It’s Okay to Have No Idea What You’re Doing

Kate Teddiman laughing with her father

I wish I had heard that it’s okay to have no career goals more often in university.

Saying No Can Let You Do So Much

Lori Straus

One of the hardest things to learn is setting boundaries: How often do you say yes to a request, only to walk away, grumbling you should have said no?

Travelling by Bicycle and Composing Music in China

Jeremy Moyer and an instrument

Living in China for the last 13 years, my preferred means of transportation has always been the bicycle. Despite an efficient and ever-expanding metro system in Shanghai and an impressive high speed rail network that can take me to any major city in a couple of hours, I still prefer my bike. On my bicycle I can choose my own path.

Shout Out

Yasmeen Nematt Alla

During my first week as a St. Jerome’s resident, all the students were invited to participate in a talent show. It was my first time away from home. I was already missing my parents and feeling out of place in a new environment. That night I performed a spoken word poem called “Shout Out,” an anthem to all the things in my life that I was grateful for.

Always in Style

Tara Parachuk laughing

Fashion, runway shows and models surrounded me during my two years volunteering at the L’Oreal Fashion week in Toronto. I loved every minute of being backstage because I was in the middle of glamourous chaos.

Turning an MVP into a poetry book

The book "when he leaves you"

Six months, six sections, and 212 pages later, my poetry book, When He Leaves You, debuted as the #1 New Release in Canadian Poetry on Amazon.com. It was a long journey that I truly believe I wouldn’t have had the energy or hustle for without having completed my undergrad at UWaterloo.

Male ring-tailed lemurs engage in “stink flirting” to attract mates

Lemur

My journey into studying the bizarre mating ritual of “stink flirting” in ring-tailed lemurs began on the University of Waterloo campus, although I didn’t actually start my research into the subject until my master’s work, years later.
