Global Futures in Focus: Hong Kong

Join fellow alumni, students and friends for a special event celebrating the University of Waterloo community in Hong Kong.

The event will feature a fireside chat with Neil Shen, a trailblazer in global venture capital and the founding and managing partner of HSG, moderated by Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher (BASc ’93, MASc ’94, PhD ’00), chancellor of the University of Waterloo. Together, they will explore how exceptional businesses are built, emerging opportunities in Hong Kong, and the critical role universities play in supporting those opportunities.

A reception will follow, where we invite you to connect with other guests and University leaders, including the president and faculty deans.

Jagdeep Singh Baccher

Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher (BASc ’93, MASc ’94, PhD ’00)

Chancellor of the University of Waterloo, Chief Investment Officer and Vice President of Investments, University of California

Dr. Jagdeep Singh Bachher is a triple alum of the University of Waterloo and currently serves as the University’s 12th chancellor. He is chief investment officer and vice president of investments at the 10-campus University of California, where he oversees an investment portfolio of $164 billion. As chancellor, Bachher acts as the ceremonial head of the institution and is responsible for conferring degrees, certificates and diplomas on graduating students.

Neil Shen is the Founding & Managing Partner of HSG. He is also Co-Founder of Trip.com (NASDAQ: TCOM), a leading global online travel agency, and Homeinns Hotel Group, a leading economy hotel chain in Asia.
 
A trailblazer in global venture capital, Neil Shen held the top position on Forbes’ Midas List from 2018 to 2020 and again in 2023, becoming the first Chinese investor to achieve this distinction. His unrivaled influence in Asia's investment landscape is evidenced by his consistent recognition as the highest-ranked Asia-based investor on the list since 2012.  Shen's visionary approach earned him a place among Forbes’ "100 Greatest Living Business Minds", Fortune’s "50 Most Influential Business Leaders in China" and "30 Most Influential Investors in China" from 2015 to 2023. His global impact has been recognized by the New York Times and CB Insights, which ranked him among the "Top 20 Venture Capitalists Worldwide" from 2016 to 2019.
 
Neil Shen serves on a number of philanthropic and public organizations and industry associations, including holding the role of Member of the International Advisory Council of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, Chairman of Yale SOM Board of Advisors, Trustee of Asia Society, Trustee of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Board Member of M Plus Museum.

He received his Master's degree from Yale University and Bachelor's degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
