Innovation and Canada’s Health Future

Join fellow University of Waterloo alumni and friends for a special event at the El Mocambo in Toronto.

The event will include a reception and fireside chat between Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor of Waterloo and Frank Baylis (BASc ‘86), executive chairman of Baylis Medical Technologies. Together, they will examine how the future of health is being reshaped at the intersection of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship and how the Waterloo community is uniquely positioned to drive real-world impact on society’s most complex challenges.  

At the reception, attendees can connect with their Waterloo network and hear from influential voices in health and innovation.  

Hosted at the El Mocambo, a Toronto landmark now reimagined as a world-class event destination, attendees will also have the chance to explore one of Canada’s most iconic music venues.

Featured Speakers

Dr. Vivek Goel

President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waterloo

Dr. Vivek Goel is the University of Waterloo's President and Vice-Chancellor. He has held a number of senior leadership roles at the University of Toronto including as VicePresident and Provost and most recently as Vice-President Research and Innovation. He served as founding President and CEO of Public Health Ontario from 2008 until 2014 and also as a founding scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). Goel has served as Chief Academic Strategist with Coursera, a global platform that connects universities and learners with online courses. Goel obtained his medical degree from McGill University and completed post-graduate medical training in Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. Dr. Goel obtained a master’s degree (MSc) in Community Health from U of T and a master’s degree (MS) in Biostatistics from Harvard University School of Public Health. 

Frank Baylis (BASc ‘86)

Executive Chairman of Baylis Medical Technologies

Frank Baylis is a professional engineer, businessman, philanthropist, human rights activist, and former politician. He currently serves as the Executive Chairman of Baylis Medical Technologies. Frank was born in Montreal, Quebec in 1962 to an English father and a Barbadian mother. He earned a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1986. 

In 1989, Frank joined Baylis Medical, a company founded by his mother Gloria Baylis three years earlier. Under Baylis' leadership, the company grew into a world leader in the development and manufacturing of medical devices in the areas of interventional cardiology and pain management.
