Ottawa Alumni Chapter Launch

Celebrate the launch of UWaterloo's newest alumni chapter in Ottawa!

Join us on Wednesday, May 1 to celebrate and connect with your UWaterloo community in Ottawa. Meet new people in your local network, hear from alumni experts and learn what the new chapter has in store.  Alumni, co-op students and friends are welcome!  

The event will feature a panel discussion with alumni experts, exploring how community-building affects individual happiness in work and life. Networking and refreshments will follow.

Speaker Biographies

Linda Duxbury

Dr. Linda Duxbury (PhD ‘83, MASc ‘77, BSc ‘75) - Full Professor and Chancellor's Professor, Management, Carleton University 

Dr. Duxbury is a three-time alumnus of the University of Waterloo including her PhD in Management Sciences.  She teaches management and strategy and change management at Sprott School of Business, Carleton University.  She has published widely in both the academic and practitioner literatures around work-family conflict, change management, supportive work environments, employee wellbeing, the use and impact of office technology and managing the new workforce.  

Most recently Dr. Duxbury has been studying the impact of COVID-19 on employee wellbeing.  In partnership with the Conference Board of Canada, she and her team have administered a survey (Employee Wellbeing in Times of COVID-19) in which over 33,000 Canadian employees from across Canada have participated.  

Dr. Duxbury is the recipient of Carleton University Faculty Graduate Mentoring Award (2013 and 2022) and has been appointed as one of eight Carleton University’s Chancellor’s Professors. 


Niraj Bhargava

Niraj Bhargava (BASc ‘86) - Founder and CEO, NuEnergy.ai and The New Energy Group 

Niraj is a self described serial entrepreneur and founder/Exec Chair of NuEnergy.ai, has a passion for innovation that benefits society and the world. NuEnergy.ai leads in AI Governance frameworks and solutions to navigate the challenge of delivering principled and trustworthy Artificial Intelligence. 

Currently, Niraj is also the Chair of the Innovation Committee of the Board at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and an Executive Committe Member of the Insitute of Corporate Directors which helps build better directors who lead better boards.  
 
Previously, Niraj was the founding CEO of Fluent.ai in Montreal, the co-founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Energate Inc., the President and CEO of Enerstat Limited and Founding CEO of QCED Inc. In addition to this he was a faculty member in Entrepreneurship at Queen’s University, a Director of the Queen’s Executive MBA, and then Dean of the Business School at Royal Roads University.   
 
Niraj has a BASc. in Systems Design Engineering from University of Waterloo and an MBA from Ivey Business School with an International Business Certificate from Stockholm School of Economics, with distinction. He completed the Directors Education Program at Rotman leading to his ICD.D designation. 


Robert Beamish

Robert Beamish (BA ‘15) - Senior Officer, Transformation Team, Global Affairs Canada 

Raised in Toronto, Canada, Robert is a Jamaican and Algonquin - Metis, focused on economic inclusion and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples around the world. He studied Economics and business with a specialization in International Trade at UW and is an alumni of the Greenhouse Social Entrepreneur program and a former residence Don.  

Robert works at Global Affairs Canada in the Transformation team leading on culture change, and Equity Diversity and Inclusion for Canada's foreign ministry.

He previously worked in Banking specializing in Indigenous Commercial financing, and in International Trade via his own businesses and through the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.
