Solidago velutina subsp. californica (Nutt.) Semple is native to dry sandy and gravelly, open to grass-covered soils, along streambeds, open woods, roadsides, and disturbed areas in California and possibly adjacent Baja California Norte in Mexico.  The subspecies is distinguished from subsp. sparsiflora by its moderately to densely strigillose stems and leaves and sparsely strigillose outer phyllaries (Semple & Cook 2006 FNA). The subspecies includes only diploids 2n=18.
